排列成层的叫子实层，其中常有不育细胞结构，那些比担子长而大、形状多种多样的叫囊状体，那些形如担子但比担子小的叫小担子。有的担子菌具有壁厚色深的刚毛。双核在担子中合并为双相核，经减数分裂，形成4个单相核，顶端生出4个小梗，小梗上生出4个担孢子，各有1个单相核。也有生出1个、两个或多个担孢子的。也有作分叉状分裂或生横隔的担子，叫做异担子或半担子。典型担子无隔圆形或棒形，叫同担子或无隔担子。担孢子斜生在小梗的顶端，与小梗接触处有突起，叫脐突，成熟时此处分泌一滴水珠，一般认为与孢子放射有关。经超显微观察，有的说是小梗细胞壁的延长生长，其中充满液体，但也有的说不是液体而是气体，因气体爆炸而放射担孢子。无性生殖编辑担子菌的无性生殖是通过菌丝断裂产生粉孢子、分生孢子或孢子芽殖，没有有性器官，但也有人说锈菌的性孢子器和受精丝是有性器官。
